Still a dark horse are the two Frankfurters COS´N BOB, who serve as prelude with a playful summer song. Easy-going beats, sizzling basses and a butterfly melody lead us to PETER ELFLEIN, who left his Frankfurt base behind and after publications under various aliases on Zehnkampf, HAL9000 and El diablo digital gives here his Berlin debut. BRIGADE MONDAINE (nbi 03, Tim Lensenta, sur plus) start from electronic instruments (analogue synthesizer, bassdrum, e-guitar and function table) to develop new tone colors and structures (the bass gives birth to Nietzsches
beard) by modular combination and manipulation, to find their
new way of a pop song, while THE PEAKS simply do a
cover-version of one turning it into a dancefloor-smasher. They
comment nonchalantly: ´Thank you, Pop!´.
PHNEUTRE (35-year old Patrick Hospital from Bordeaux) never possessed
an U.S. khaki pack in school and therefore
had to pay the full price: The girls thought he was cute, but
never kissed him until he was 17! So he decided to do it like
James Bond. He became a writer ("Del Asorte", L´Attende
editions, Bordeaux), a sculptor (mamco, museum for modern
and contemporary art, Geneva) and he makes music using a computer,
an amplifier, loudspeaker, a soundcard worth 50
euros, a mini-disc-player and a microphone, software and a midi-keyboard.
After two albums ("Vorgaenge", tête-à-tête
03, "8", digital kranky 8) here´s a new piece
of KOENIGJOHANNES, this time
processing his co-musician Reiner Hundsdoerfer (Koenig & Hundsdoerfer,
Beatorganisation) with the sampler.
Familiar stereo-effects, warm sounds and a little funkyness lead
to the creaky-dubby sample-classic of FORESTOPPER
(alias Thomas André), who after numerous projects (tête-à-tête,
Morphine Boutique, DeathDiscoClub,
AnbauNeueMitte: "Die Falsches Leben Show") cannot be
called a new-comer to the Berlin-scene anymore.
Perhaps in contrast to the feared No-info specialist ERIC FREEMAN,
who performed a convincing appearance together
with Kein Babel, Rohan Thomas, Rosy Parlane and Mattin at the
Podewil. Usually, however, he rather avoids the
public. This time, he delivers a super-cacophonic intermezzo.
With digital laptop-chaos, in parts reminding of Oval, the former
inhabitant of a summer-house in Bremen, Tim Tetzner
follows as HORDE to be rounded off by a moody finale from Luxembourg:
BLUE DRESSED MAN provides melancholy
drones and guitar-soundscapes, all kinds of industrially seeming
noises and the necessary portion of sadness and rage. |

Groove
Also es ist auf jeden Fall schon mal ein recht buntes Sammelsurium,
was da auf dieser Compilation aus
Berlin-Friedrichshain zusammenkommt. Dabei scheint der kleinste
gemeinsame Nenner der zu sein, dass die Beiträge
tendenziell weder digital noch sonderlich kranky sind. Die Sounds
wirken eher nostalgisch analog und akustisch, und
zumindest auf der A-Seite überwiegt Harmloses und Beschauliches.
Artige Orgel- und Synth-Dudelein von Cos´n´Bob, von
Brigade Mondaine (plus Lagerfeuergitarre) und Peter Elflein (plus
doofe "Jungs, die Mädchen ..."-Lyrics) tun niemandem
weh, wecken aber auch nicht viel mehr Lust auf mehr als "Be
Your Dog", ein Beitrag zum Thema "überflüssige
Cover-Versionen unverzichtbarer Songs" von den Peaks. Einzig
Phneutres nicht unfetzige Lärmstapelei am Ende macht
wieder neugierig auf die B-Seite, und da liefern dann Königjohannes
und Forestopper zwei ziemlich hörenswerte
Krimi-Soundtracks, dazu spult Blue Dressed Man ganz hübsche
Rückwärts-Gitarrenloops ab. Vor allem aber gibt es ein
echtes Highlight zu hören, das einen für alle Fadheiten
der A-Seite entschädigt: Eine wirklich richtig gute
Fuzzy-Glitch-Geschichte von Tim Tetzner.

Ein junges Label aus dem Berliner Irgendwo mit seiner ersten Compilation.
Darauf enthalten sind bunt gewürfelte und
dennoch gut ausgesuchte Stücke von Künstlern wie Königjohannes,
Brigade Mondaine, Forestopper, Peter Elflein etc.
Also keine großen Namen hier, sondern noch unbekannte Talente,
deren musikalisches Spektrum von
Electro-Coverversionen (The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog")
über Minimalismen und Ambient bis hin zu Plinkerpop
reicht. Mein persönlicher Lieblingstrack befindet sich ganz
am Ende, kommt von Blue Dressed Man und eigentlich dürfte
jede und jeder hier mindestens einen Namen finden, nachdem er
in Zukunft voller Vorfreude Ausschau halten wird. (tbl)

Digital Kranky kompiliert Tracks, die ihnen aufgefallen sind, Freunde vorbeigebracht haben, seit langem immer wieder aufgelegt werden und sich schon zu kleinen
Hits entwickelt haben und sich immer wieder ins Gespräch geflüstert haben. Peter Elflein, Brigade Mondaine, Koenigjohannes, Forestopper, Eric Freeman, Horde
aka Tim Tetzner...zwischen Iggy Pop Coverversion, Gitarrenplinkereien, Liebesliedern, digitalen Verwürfnissen, sonnigem Pop in deutscher Sprache, Vocal CutUp wie
damals bei Yazoo...ich habe lange keine Compilation mehr gehört, die so viel so gut zusammenbringt. Perfekt. (thaddi #####)

listenable electronica stuff... if you like KRAAK and HAUSMUSIK-stuff, you should definitely check this out!
